Spearfish
South Dakota

Spearfish South Dakota has some of the prettiest scenery around, and some of the most beautiful scenic drives, secret caves and trails!

Spearfish South Dakota was once a little College town, but now it is also made up of many of the areas retiree's. Once you visit, you will be captivated and understand why so many have decided to call this home!

This cute little town has grown over the years in leaps and bounds, and now offers big city amenities (for SD that is) like a Walmart, and a new fish hatchery which is FREE!

FREE Fish Hatchery

One of our very favorite (and FREE) things to do while here is to go to the State Fish Hatchery. It is the newest and largest hatchery in our area. They have an underwater viewing area (get up close and personal with these fish!) and a kids favorite, feed the fish! Bring along some quarters (or a pocketful!) for the little machines that spit out the fish food. It is pretty cool to watch them swim fast, jump and do a fabulous ballet over top of each other in competition for the food.

Spearfish has a lovely Park which is next door to the Fish Hatchery. On the other side of the Hatchery is the Cities camping park, this is a lovely picturesque facility that we can highly recommend!

Everyone comes to see Spearfish Canyon

Just outside this little town lies one of the most beautiful and scenic drives in the area! The well known Spearfish Canyon is located right outside of town on Hwy 14A which is just off of Colorado Blvd. and is also known as the Spearfish Canyon Nature Byway.

Roughlock Falls is hands down the premier destination for folks heading down the byway on a beautiful scenic drive thru the Canyon. Roughlock Falls is found all the way at the end of this road.

It is such an enchanting little oasis found in the middle of the Hills!

There is an easy easy path down to view the Falls up close, and the drive is spectacular!

This is a really easy hike and one just about anybody can do. You do drop down a ways to get to the bottom of the falls, but the path is a steady and sure man made one, just take your time coming back up if needed. There are plenty of "rest" areas and benches to sit and gaze upon the falls as you go. We rate this hike at a 1.5, with a 5 being the hardest.

Best time to visit

This meandering and tranquil drive is especially popular in the Fall with the locals, during the color changing of the leaves. This is OUR version of the East coast in the fall, it is drop dead gorgeous!

This is so popular with the locals that the news stations keep us up to date as to when the "peak" time is. This year they say the weekend of September 15th is when it should be at it's peak change time, with multitudes of colors on the trees...gorgeous! This weekend will find loads of traffic up there, but worth the effort to see!

Here is a picture of it just starting to turn colors...

Hiking Spearfish Canyon

Hiking and biking Spearfish Canyon are popular pass times. What a perfect spot to retreat to and forget the crazy world for awhile!

There are several hiking trails to be found here, but 2 of the very best are the Secret Community Caves of Spearfish Canyon hike and the hike back in to Devils Bathtub. These are both tough hikes, especially the caves, but you will see some of the Hills that others never get to see. A little hard work pays off here!

The best of Spearfish South Dakota is found off the scenic byway, drive it and visit it, and we think you will agree!
